ReCitizen is an L3C based in Washington, DC.
Our dream is to tap individual ambition for the public good..to renew our world by enabling all of us to renew our lives, and our neighborhoods.
We think of recitizens–our members–as the “entrepreneurs of paradise.”
We all want to improve our own lives. Most of us would like to do so in a way that improves the world around us. We all know, on some level, that we can never create an individual “paradise” when those around us (humans and wildlife alike) are suffering.
But we also know that good intentions are insufficient. Dreams and desires can only create a healthier, wealthier, happier, more beautiful world for all if empowered by appropriate tools. ReCitizen provides free tools for quickly and easily connecting individual ambition to the public good.
An L3C is legally known as a “low-profit, limited liability company”. It’s designed for enterprises whose mission is to advance social and environmental missions, while retaining the ability to be financially self-sufficient. As such, they are able to accept impact investments from private foundations, banks, and public agencies. This financial independence is important to our mission, since non-profits are often dependent on grants, which makes them more easily influenced by those providing the money.
We develop web tools to advance citizen-led regeneration of communities and natural resources. These “crowd technologies” (crowdmapping, crowdsourcing, and crowdfunding) are provided to communities worldwide. Our revenue is based on membership fees, and on a small usage fee for the crowdfunding portion of those otherwise-free tools.
Who Is ReCitizen For?
The citizen-led renewal trend means that community redevelopment is no longer the sole domain of the wealthy, nor the antiquated institutions that tend to create barriers to local innovators and entrepreneurs.
ReCitizen helps put your local future in the hands of all local residents, regardless of economic or social class. The middle class–and those marginalized folks who aspire to the middle class–are the bedrock of any community’s or nation’s society and economy. For example: many communities have found that immigrant and minority entrepreneurs–who often aren’t yet legal citizens of their new country–are the key to turning around distressed neighborhoods.
The richest source of innovative solutions to community challenges often lies in those unemployed and under-employed people who wish to create a career for themselves that’s more fulfilling than the jobs they lost. ReCitizen is for them. But ReCitizen is also for wealthier residents and leaders who are wise enough to realize that enabling and cooperating with these motivated folks can be the best way to secure or enhance their own fortunes.
Economic stratification and inequity are the surest ways to destabilize any society, and that threatens everyone, rich and poor alike. ReCitizen is here to help create a world of renewal, connection, and cooperation that makes established institutions more relevant to the disenfranchised and middle class alike…and that helps wed personal aspirations to a healthier, wealthier, happier future for all.
